WWYD: What Would You Do?

Today’s enews is going to be very different. Only one section. A thought exercise.

Many organizations do not think and plan for what to do in the event of a public crisis. But as someone who’s been there, I can tell you this is a pain point you do not want to avoid.

Why am I bringing this up?

Here’s what I’d like you to do (Content note: The below article deals with domestic violence):

  1. Please read this article about a nonprofit founder who was arrested a few days ago.

  2. Reply to this email and tell me the first THREE things your organization would do if you were facing a major public crisis (doesn’t have to be similar to the above story but think about something happening at your nonprofit which, if it hit the news, would be a bad look). For example, this. Or holy hell this. Or this.

Maybe you already know because you’ve dealt with this or have a policy which covers this. Maybe you need to think about it because crisis comms isn’t on your radar.

Either way, please take a few minutes and then reply.

Next week I’ll share with you what happened to me as a fundraiser. It was a pain point I hadn’t considered. Until news broke ONE WEEK before the institution’s biggest fundraising event of the year… which I was managing.

What do you do to stop all hell from breaking loose?

Back at it next Thursday with the story, lessons and solutions.
